Onyx is a cryptocrystalline form of quartz. The colors of its bands range from white to almost every color however pure black onyx is common and perhaps the most famous variety. Onyx was another favorite jewelry material of ancient Greeks and Romans. Many examples of onyx jewelry can be found in museums around the world.
